In this episode of Spices of Life, Nina Simonds interviews Ravi and Sonia in their car, the studio for their show DriveTime, and gives them strategies to make their dinners easier and healthier. Nina’s suggestions include making meals in one dish, cooking food on weekends and reheating during the week. Nina then gives them advice on creating a small pantry and maintaining spices. I interviewed the Boston Typewriter Orchestra at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston. These guys make music using old manual typewriters. I spoke with Derrik Albertelli who told me how the band got started and Alex Holman who talked about making music with a typewriter. I was there during their sound check for a show where they were opening for Boston favorites, The Dresden Dolls. You can hear Amanda Palmer in the backgroud at the start of the interview if you listen closely. This report originally aired on Rocketboom on December 12, 2006.

Local historian discovers 400 plus unmarked graves in Southborough, MA, oldest cemetery. Using geophysics and a 3D mapping device subsurface objects are clearly displayed. Further research is planned by a Newton archeologists in conjunction with the local Historical Society. David Falconi, a long time resident of the town is heading up this investigation that seems to be unraveling a very interesting mystery. It’s a matter of grave identities at this point.

This is a little trick that my grandmother, Sylvia uses all the time. She cuts an old cracker box on three sides along the edge and lines it with wax paper. Then she fills it with sweets, this time jam squares which are my favorite. Depression babies know all the good tricks. This video was made last year during the early vlogrush. I decied to repost it on a more visible site. When I just watched it again I realized that at the beginning of the video Sylvia is talking with her sister Helen, who has since passed. Sylvia would always concede that Helen was the better cook, but those jam squares are out of this world. Thanks Nana.

I will not engage in the politics of fear. Because fear is poisonous. All through history it has been used to hold back progress and limit fairness. Only hope defeats fear. It always has. At a candidates forum last week, the moderator asked each of us to say something nice about the other candidates. Kerry Healey rather grudgingly said, Well, he can give a good speech. She would know this not because she has ever attended a speech of mine but because she has them filmed by this fine fellow here. But her dismissive point, and I hear it from her staff, is that all I have to offer is words.

Just words.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Just words. We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Just words.

Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.

Just words.

I have a dream.

Just words.

Let me say it before you do: I am no Dr. King, no President Kennedy, no FDR, no Thomas Jefferson. But I do know that the right words, spoken from the heart with conviction, with a vision of a better place and a faith in the unseen, are a call to action.

Art Mob at the Public Garden

Andy Carvin tossed together a two-minute piece for Rocketboom on an art mob that assembled at Boston’s Public Garden. At first I thought they were war protestors holding signs, but they were actually a group of photographers who were standing in a circle holding out large photos they’d taken around the garden. They decided to become a human gallery at the garden. Originally formed as a meetup group, they were asking garden visitors to upload their own photos to a virtual version of the gallery.
